This will be possible through the use of the Barbados Integrated Government (BIG) portal, HYPERLINK "http://www.gov.bb" www.gov.bb, which was launched at the Vendors and Information Technology Entrepreneurs Conference (VITEC 2008) now under way at the Sherbourne Conference Centre.

In an address delivered by Senior Systems Analyst of the Data Processing Department, Eustace Russell, on behalf of Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Senator Maxine McClean, he said government’s intranet facilities would be taken to a new level via the portal through its web conferencing and file sharing technology.

Focus On ICT
In a Region comprising mainly island states, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is probably the single most important facilitator of the integration process namely, the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). The strong influence of Information and Communication Technology in shaping the process of globalization, particularly in the productive, commercial and financial spheres, is also widely recognised.

These facts have been clearly recognised by the Heads of Government of CARICOM who mandated the CARICOM Secretariat to prepare, by a participatory process, a CARICOM ICT Strategy. E-Learning Project to get Underway this Month
The government's e-learning project will get underway this September in 31 institutions across the island.
The one-year pilot will be implemented in 28 high schools at the grades 10 and 11 levels, and three teachers colleges.

After the test phase, the project will be rolled out to all of the nation's 150 high schools from grades seven to 11, says Avrill Crawford, Chief Executive Officer and Project Manager of e-Learning Jamaica Company Limited, the organisation formed by government to manage the project.

She tells JIS News that the pilot phase is aimed at testing all the planned procedures and methodologies of the project, identifying best practices and determining the support systems that must be in place for successful project implementation. "We are starting the pilot programme in September and schools will begin to get equipment. We have already started the orientation of teachers and we should be starting the actual training in ICT (information communication technology) and how to use ICT beginning in November," Mrs. Crawford informs.

Government of Barbados wins management of .BB domain

Nov. 26, 2007 -- At ICANN's latest board meeting, a resolution was passed granting .BB, the country code domain for Barbados, to the local government.

According to the official database listing Internet country code (ccTLD) managers, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority or IANA, .BB's current operator is the local office of Cable & Wireless.

Historically, ccTLD management has often been handled by local Internet companies, large ISPs… or even outsourced to foreign entities which had either the technical or commercial resources to get the ccTLD off the ground.
