A Barbados Government Minister has reiterated the need for small entrepreneurs to remain on the cutting edge of changes within the financial landscape, by pursuing computer training.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, Patrick Todd, made this suggestion last Monday night (25 January), while addressing the graduation ceremony for the Small Business Association's (SBA) Entrepreneurial Training Series Programme.

He pointed out that changes to the business environment, coupled with enhancing one's knowledge and skills, were necessary to keep up with the latest developments in the sector.

Todd added: "To facilitate real and sustained socio-economic growth and development of the small and medium-sized business sectors in Barbados, entrepreneurship training and retraining of persons involved in small businesses, is critical."

He further stated: "The strategic goal of enhancing the use of information and communications technology in the small business environment must be advanced, if any attempt to take advantage of the opportunities presented through globalisation, is to be achieved."

The Minister of State also outlined the financial gains from utilising information technology. "In a globalised environment, information technology has not only brought our world closer together, but it has allowed the world's economies to become a single independent system or global village," he said.

Todd noted: "Information technology has helped to streamline businesses by transforming them into cost effective money-making enterprises. This, in turn, increases their efficiency and productivity and gives rise to greater opportunities for expansion."

He lauded the SBA for providing training opportunities for their members and urged the graduands to utilise their skills to make their businesses more profitable.
