BELMOPAN, Belize: Efforts are being made towards the development of a regional policy to guide local government development across the entire Caribbean. The Belizean government in a recent release said two public consultations will be held there later this month to gather input towards the development of a regional policy and cooperation framework on local governance and democracy in the Caribbean. "This policy will guide local government development in Belize and the Caribbean in the medium and long term," a release from the Belize government said. An initial draft outline of the framework was formulated earlier this year at a meeting of the technical working group of local government experts along with the international advisory group. That outline will be the basis for soliciting inputs at the September 17 and 19 consultations in Belize. "The information resulting from these consultations will be used to prepare a first draft of the regional policy and cooperation framework which will then be presented to ministers and officers responsible for local government at a second regional conference in November in Trinidad," the released added. It continued that the final draft policy will be submitted for endorsement by the CARICOM heads of government. The talks are being organized by the secretariat for the Caribbean Forum of Local Government Ministers (CFLGM) in partnership with the ministry of Labour, Local Government and Rural Development.
